The coffee cup trembled in Emily's hand, sloshing lukewarm liquid over the rim. She’d barely slept in weeks. The ringing phone, the unending demands of her job, the constant worries – they were a relentless barrage. When the doctor had called, her heart had pounded an erratic rhythm against her ribs.

“Ms. Carter, we need to discuss your…tests.” It was the doctor's careful tone that had sent a chill through her. Now, she was staring at the paper in front of her. Not her information. Different bloodwork, a different history. Different diagnoses. Her breath hitched.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a vast emptiness that threatened to swallow her whole. The world around her seemed to fade, colors bleeding into one another. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the energy just wasn’t there.
